چکیده

The localisation of auditory and tactile events is strongly affected by visual information, reflecting the dominant role of vision in spatial perception. New research suggests that early visual experience is critical for the establishment of such multisensory links.

Audio-Tactile Integration and the Influence of Musical Training

Perception of our environment is a multisensory experience; information from different sensory systems like the auditory, visual and tactile is constantly integrated. Complex tasks that require high temporal and spatial precision of multisensory integration put strong demands on the underlying networks but it is largely unknown how task experience shapes multisensory processing. Long-term music...

Audiovisual speech integration: modulatory factors and the link to sound symbolism

In this talk, I will review some of the latest findings from the burgeoning literature on the audiovisualintegration of speech stimuli. I will focus on those factors that have been demonstrated to influence thisform of multisensory integration (such as temporal coincidence, speaker/gender matching, andattention; Vatakis & Spence, 2007, 2010). I will also look at a few of the oth...

Unconscious integration of multisensory bodily inputs in the peripersonal space shapes bodily self-consciousness.

Recent studies have highlighted the role of multisensory integration as a key mechanism of self-consciousness. In particular, integration of bodily signals within the peripersonal space (PPS) underlies the experience of the self in a body we own (self-identification) and that is experienced as occupying a specific location in space (self-location), two main components of bodily self-consciousne...

The effects of attention on the temporal integration of multisensory stimuli

In unisensory contexts, spatially-focused attention tends to enhance perceptual processing. How attention influences the processing of multisensory stimuli, however, has been of much debate. In some cases, attention has been shown to be important for processes related to the integration of audio-visual stimuli, but in other cases such processes have been reported to occur independently of atten...

direction of visual stimuli, especially when visual motion direction is ambiguous. Arrighi et al. (2011) focus on the effect of the attentional resources on crossmodal perceptual abilities, and show that vision and audition rely on separate attentional resources. Finally, Chen et al. (2011) provide novel evidence for the effect of the auditory semantic context on visual awareness by using the b...
